Scania Driver Competitions 2016/2017 Finals
Serdang, 3 August 2017 – The truck category was won by Sarveswaran Srues a/l Ram of Air Products Sdn Bhd, Malaysia, walking away with RM10,000 in cash, a Challenge Trophy and certificate. Meanwhile, the bus category champion was Law Cheok Gheen of Zulco Sdn Bhd, Malaysia, taking home RM10,000 in cash, a Challenge Trophy and certificate.
This year, participants were from Indonesia, Singapore, Myanmar, Philippines and Malaysia. A total of 19 drivers took part in the truck and bus category. The competition focused on increasing road safety awareness, improving fuel consumption, minimising the environmental impact on the environment.
“We have seen increasing interest in this event and that is a good indication it has been a catalyst in getting heavy commercial vehicle drivers to upgrade their skills,” said Marie Sjödin Enström, managing director, Scania Southeast Asia.
“There are 257,000 trucks in the country operated by 41,000 individuals/companies and there are 43,000 buses operated by 18,000 individuals/companies,” said Zamri Mahmud, acting CEO, SPAD.
“100,000 of the trucks operate in the Klang Valley,” he added.
The truck drivers were tested using a Scania G410LA6x2MSZ attached to a trailer carrying a 20ft container. A Scania Marcopolo K410IB4x2 coach was used in the bus category. The competition involved series of timed maneuvering tasks including the ‘knock the cone’ precision teat and ‘broadwalk’ obstacle test.
