Non-national segment still led by UMW Toyota
“Business conditions have changed if we relate to the performance of this year compared to 2008. On a year-on-year basis, the Malaysian automotive market has contracted almost 11%. “ “However, Toyota is glad to maintain its position as the market leader in the Non-National category, with more than 15% market share of the Total Industry Volume (TIV) in Malaysia. In the Non-National Passenger Car (PC) segment, Toyota has narrowly edged out its nearest competitor by selling 15,316 units in total. “Our popular Toyota Vios continues to be the No. 1 in its category [Small PC, 1,400 – 1,500 cc], with 11,126 sold from January – May, representing 53%, market share in this segment. Toyota recently added the new Vios TRD Sportivo variant to its lineup which it hopes will further boost its position as market leader in the small PC segment. “Hilux remains the Best Seller in its category (Light Duty Pickup). For the first five (5) months of this year, we sold more than 5,100 units of Hilux, giving us a market share of almost 50% in P. Malaysia, and 53% in East Malaysia.
With the recovering economy, UMW Toyota Motor foresees the growth momentum being sustained and hopes for a better second half of the year performance. |
