Mercedes-Benz positive Q1 performance

Kuala Lumpur, 21 April 2009 - Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has bucked markets trends to register a modest 3.5 per cent sales growth within its passenger car segment to 908 units for the quarter ending March 31, 2009 compared to 877 units in the same period last year.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class posted a 124 per cent sales growth in the first three months of 2009 over Q108. The C-Class cemented its position as one of the most preferred choice in its segment with a record of over 420 cars delivered in that period.

Buoyed by the launch of the C230 AVANTGARDE in June 2008, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class continues to drive demand owing to its sleek and sporty look alongside the brand’s signature for safety and comfort.

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class also achieved impressive sales with more than 90 units sold in Q109, up by 60 per cent compared to Q108. Given its trendy and spacious design, the B-Class has garnered much attention since its introduction here and enjoys steady demand.

According to Peter Honegg, President & CEO of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, despite the ongoing financial crisis, several Mercedes-Benz Malaysia ’s passenger car models have performed better than expectations resulting in the company’s first quarter sales growth.

“I am delighted with the performance in view of the economic challenges we are facing currently. Demand for our C-Class and B-Class cars has been very encouraging while customers have maintained a strong interest in the rest of our fleet.”

“This performance is definitely encouraging for Mercedes-Benz Malaysia as it is the perfect antidote during these gloomy market conditions. Our sales achievement bears testament to the exceptional quality of our cars in spite of the lower consumer sentiment and conservative spending patterns. We must acknowledge the robust efforts and commitment of our dealer networks to deliver unparalleled service to our customers.”

With the newly appointed Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his government’s active engagement in introducing stimulus packages, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia is hopeful the local economy will be revitalised.

“These positive measures should gradually result in regaining consumer confidence and spur spending again. With the government impetus to stimulate the economy, we are confident the automotive segment should pick up in the months ahead.”

The popular Mercedes-Benz E-Class, renowned for its comfort, elegance and power, continues to maintain a stronghold in its segment with 300 cars delivered in Q109.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz’s flagship, the S-Class, remained one of the top choices in the luxury segment. With more than 70 units sold in the first quarter, the S-Class persists with its reputation as the height of luxury coupled with excellent safety and performance.

Overall performance for the Mercedes-Benz Malaysia trucks and commercial vehicles segment took an expected dip in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the corresponding period last year.

Sales of Fuso dropped to 252 units but this line is expected to see demand rise on the back of two new models being introduced into the market later this year while the Fuso dealer network will be expanded with the inclusion of seven new dealers during the year.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia also envisages a surge in truck sales with the government’s stimulus package providing a much-needed boost to the construction industry.

“While we have achieved admirable results in Q109, we believe the current market conditions will continue for awhile. Cognisant of the situation, we hope to build on our current sales momentum throughout the year while implementing various cost containment measures and efficiency programs set in place by our headquarters in Stuttgart . However, we will not compromise on the quality of our vehicles and service to our customers.”
