Malaysian automotive industry in 2007

Subang Jaya, 29 January 2008 - The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) today officially released the industry?s performance for the year 2007 and the report was presented by Datuk Aishah Ahmad, its President.

The total industry volume (TIV) of motor vehicles sold dropped to 487,176 compared to 490,768 in 2006 and this represents a drop of 0.7%. Of this, 442,885 units were passenger vehicles and in percentage terms it is 91% of TIV which is similar to that is 2006.

A total of 44,291 units of commercial vehicles were registered and compared to 44,596 units in 2006, registering a drop of 0.7%.

The forecast for 2008 is a TIV growth of 4.7% or 510,000 units made up of 463,000 units of passenger vehicles, a growth of 4.5% and 47,000 commercial vehicles, a 6.1% growth.

Perodua secured the first place with 33.3% market share with 162.152 units, Proton, 24.2% or 118,143 units and Toyota 16.8% or 81,993 units. This is followed by Honda, Naza, Nissan and Inokom.

In the commercial vehicle category, Toyota leads with 27.4% market share followed by Nissan 17.2%, Daihatsu 11.4%, Hicom Prekasa 8.9%, Mitsubishi 7.9% and Isuzu 7.0%.

Across ASEAN, the TIV for 2007 was Indonesia 411,638, an increase of 39%, Thailand 1,188, 044 units and Vietnam 35,087 units which is an increase of 114%. The total TIV for the region is 1,987,100 representing an increase of 12%.
